The Waste Land
The Poem of the Century Was a Hoax
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
The Mind Behind the Investigation
Lawrence Maykel is an independent scholar whose decades-long fascination with T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land led him to uncover the greatest literary hoax of the twentieth century. Drawing on careful textual analysis and biographical research, Maykel reconstructs the original poem that Eliot deliberately fragmented before publication.

About The Book
T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land has been hailed as “the poem of the century”—a masterpiece studied in universities worldwide, annotated in critical editions, and placed alongside the works of Dante, Chaucer, and Shakespeare. But what if the poem’s fragmented structure, its baffling notes, and its apparent incoherence were all part of an elaborate deception?
In this provocative work of literary detective scholarship, Lawrence Maykel argues that The Waste Land was never meant to be read as published. Instead, Eliot deliberately scrambled a beautiful, unified narrative poem into a jumble of verses, creating what Maykel calls “a verse Frankenstein”—complete with bogus scholarly notes designed to mislead critics and scholars for generations.
Drawing on connections between Eliot and Sherlock Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle, Maykel presents compelling evidence that two of history’s most ingenious hoaxes, the Piltdown Man archaeological fraud and The Waste Land itself, emerged from the same literary circle in London within a decade of each other.
